If you could only have one rod for salmon fishing on the west coast, The Shimano Technium Mooching Rod would be a pretty solid choice. I’ve used them for decades, and currently have 9 of them covering my two boats.

These rods were developed specifically for west coast salmon, steelhead and sturgeon fishing, but my personal experience with them has been primarily in saltwater mooching and trolling for salmon.

And over the years on my boats, the Techniums have landed countless salmon of all species from small pinks to chinook over 60 pounds. And while the Techniums are not really meant for bottom fishing, I also use them fairly frequently for lingcod and halibut using both trolling and bottom bouncing techniques, and have landed halibut in excess of 80 pounds using these rods. And finally, I’ve also witnessed the Techniums in many tug of wars with many non-intended, larger and stronger animals like seals and sea lions and so far, I have personally never seen a Technium break while fighting anything - fish, seal or snag.

In fact, the TC4 glass and graphite carbon material has made the durability of these rods legendary. They really are virtually indestructible, yet retain the feel and sensitivity ideal for this type of fishing.

At 10’6” they are a “traditional” salmon mooching/trolling length rod, with a slow action. They come as 2 piece rods in either a Medium or Medium Heavy flex, allowing for personal preferences. Cork upper grip is comfortable on the hands and the EVA material on the lower grip is better suited and more durable than cork for use in trolling rod holders. Fuji line guides work well with braided and mono lines, and the Fuji reel seat provides a secure footing for any reel.

You don’t have to look far to see that these rods are highly regarded and have been fixtures on the salmon fishing scene on the west coast for many years, for good reason.
